The reader I have (or will have once FedEx shows up) does not support the return signaling as far as I can tell. Though it might be useful as an exit reader.

Before picking up readers/cards outside of what I got for testing, we really should decide on which card type we're going to use. That comes down to what frequency they use 125KHz or 13.56MHz, and what data format. Obviously cost of readers and cards will be a deciding factor, and since we'll be using two factor authentication the the encryption (if any) on the card itself isn't really important. I've seen some readers that will do more than one data format, but none that will do more than one frequency, so that will likely be the first thing to decide on.
So far I haven't been able to find anything that says which HID readers use what data format as they prefer to use their own branding, but I'm sure there's info out there somewhere. I just haven't put the time into looking for yet just yet.
The one that I have is 125KHz and uses EM-4001 compatible chip. It might support others, but the data sheet doesn't say anything about it.
