HR-2600: Meeting Summary for May 1, 2009
by enferex on May.02, 2009, under hr2600
Allright! May 1, and we still had a crowd. In attendance (initial seating order, no we are not sheeple) was RD, Dane, Dane’s Wife’s Eeeeeeeee, Dave, Sunpuke, Beck, and myself. Okokok, so an Eee does not really constitute as a living being, or does it? Since we only have a vague idea of what constitutes life…. probably has some carbon in there too.
The meeting was great, mall was quiet, and only a handful of people had their protective respiration masks on (ok actually no one had a mask on afaik). There was lots of talk. And talk of? Ahh many topics, I balk at providing actual topic data since. Anyways, even though we were not at a single round-table, our linear table arrangement worked well by leaving a gap between the tables. A linear configuration does not necessarily strengthen communication between nodes, as if we were some graph; However, our graph morphs by letting the nodes move around, and we can control the ordering and amplitude of our voices to accomplish the goals of expressing thoughts. This assumes that words really are a medium that is sufficient for exposing all data in a thought.
Where was tele? He caught up with the Raleigh 2600 crew, so hopefully they had a cool time too.

Matt’s Been Getting Around!
by adam on Apr.20, 2009, under computers, security
In addition to his previously mentioned 2600 Magazine publication, Matt has been published in the (arguably more prestigious) Dr. Dobb’s Journal. You can find his article, detailing a multi-threaded PRNG implementation, here.
Congrats!
Matt is published in the current 2600 magazine

For that that haven’t caught it yet, Enferex (Matt) has an article published in the current (Spring) edition of “2600 – The Hacker Quarterly.” The title of the article is “MP3 Data Stream as a Covert Means of Distributing Information.” Page 16. 2600 can be found at any Barnes & Nobles.
CarolinaCon 2009 – Great!
by Ethan on Apr.19, 2009, under security
Erik and myself headed down to CarolinaCon in Durham a few weeks ago. Have to say, it was fun! It’s a very small con, perhaps 100 people. There were some great presentations ranging in subjects from the McColo story (a co-location facility that housed a large number of servers used by people committing fraud and spamming). The story included how people got them de-peered so they were disconnected from the internet and why it’s gone. TXS spoke on reverse engineering subjects, and some other talks that slip my mind at the moment. Sorry for the late update, but I had to say it was fun! Had hoped to make NotACon this year, but once again missed it. Perhaps more locals will make Carolina Con next year?
HR-2600: Meeting Summary for April 3, 2009
by enferex on Apr.04, 2009, under hr2600
Wow, probably one of the shortest 2600 meetings ever. That was not a bad thing per-se, as many of us had plans that occurred around the same time. What this does suggest is the dedication of people coming out. Even though some had plans, people still tucked away the meeting in their agenda. This month, the attendance was, in clock-wise order from where I sat: tele, cdated derez, x17root, Justin, Dave, remad, and myself.
Sunpuke did not make it out, as he was scoring some most-leet seats at the Jewish Mother, for a concert, to which a few of us attended. “Most-leet seats you say Bill?” … “That’s right Ted!” … “wiggly wiggly weeewwww!” (Bill and Ted reference), and their most non-bodacious dudical vernacular. Till next month?, keep it out of the middle endian.

HR-2600: Meeting Summary for March 6, 2009
by enferex on Mar.07, 2009, under hr2600
Appears that the Pembroke location is the spot for the meets! Chill atmosphere. Plus, I think it is more central for people. I should also mention, while we did have one attendee last month (Shmoo month) he could not find the meeting. We will not preclude him from attendance, as he was there in effort. That situation was possibly because most attendees were at Shmoo. Aside from that, last meeting was the 6 year anniversary, so we did have attendance, in some state of searching.
In attendance (in seating order) this month was Remad, Charles, Dane, Andrew, Tele, Dave, Erik, Sunpuke, Justin, and myself. Lots of talk. Once the mall closed, which they don’t seem to mind us staying there after closing, we decided, on our own decision, to move things outside some more.

Windows “Street View” truck spotted in Norfolk
by Ethan on Feb.26, 2009, under GPS, visualization, website
A camera truck taking street level imagry was spotted in downtown Norfolk on Thursday. The truck carried the Windows Live Local logo on the back, and FaceT logo on the door. This is most likely a Google street-view competitor. Interesting means they have for mounting the cameras! Not only was there the panoramic “stove pipe” looking part, there was also a number of other sensors mounted on the luggage rack.
Original images are on my Flickr Account.)

SkeeBot (Skeeball) machine a success!
by Ethan on Feb.18, 2009, under 757labs, cons, electronics, RFID
1st place was taken at the 2009 Shmoocon Hacker Arcade for the skeebot modified skeeball machine! A conventional skeeball machine was upgraded. Features added include RFID authentication of the wooden balls, a 19″ widescreen LCD display, 1980 music videos, dollar and coin validation, 16.7 million color computer interfaced lighting, 750 watt strobe (also computer interfaced), seconardy LCD for digital ticket system (using USB port for thumbdrive), ground effects (also RGB LED based), and more! It was by far the largest, and technically only entry at this years arcade. Thanks to David of Outer Banks Amuseuments for the machine. The machine was given to Bruce & Heidi of the Shmoogroup (minus most electronics). We hope to see it in the future modified in all new ways. We’ve already got a list of new ideas for next year’s hacker arcade.
Eventually all source code and docs will be posted under skeebot at www.757labs.com. Video was also recorded to make a short video about the project.
Thanks to Remad and Enferex for much help in transportation, testing, and setting it up! Enferex wrote some code for a web component that unfortunately wasn’t finished. It might find it’s way into a future project though!

February Meetup
by adam on Feb.17, 2009, under HRGeeks Meeting, robots
Here’s a taste of what you missed if you weren’t at the meetup last week! Brian brought the robot he is entering into the BattleBots contest in California, and gave us a quick (it was freezing out) parking lot demo of the thing in action. Everything on the chassis (except the motors, I think) is custom built by Brian and his classmate, even the dual-motor gear box. Very impressive!
Good luck with the contest Brian – we’d love to see it again with the end effector in place

(It’s dark because it was about 10:30PM at night in the mall parking lot. Sorry – better video next time!)
HR-2600: Meeting Summary for February 6, 2009
by enferex on Feb.12, 2009, under hr2600
6 years old! This month adds another ring to the tree of HR 2600. I have yet to really get much feedback from this month’s meeting, as some of us did not attend due to being at Shmoocon. If anyone has feedback pertaining to the meeting (if it even was held) please post a comment.
